Qui tornano in cifra.

Scenes from a novel, hidden in cipher. Gather them, and they name the book they live in.
Scattered through "The Gaze in the Shadow" (Urbino, 1502) are signs — not in the places, but between them. Here they return as cipher. Each one decodes to a scene. Each key follows from the sign before, so the trail is walked in order. Solve them yourself, or read what others have already unlocked. When the signs are gathered, they point home.
Every sign is a keyed Vigenère on a standard tabula recta. The alphabet is counted A = 1. The key to each sign is a single word, hinted below the cipher — and after the first, the hint comes from the scene you've just solved. The ciphertext is in English.
Beware the too-beautiful convergence. If a solution arrives all at once and you feel relieved — look again. Relief is not a proof.

The key is a single word: what a gaze falls into when the light goes.
"The first sign lies between the places."

The key is a single word: what the bell leaves behind.
"At dusk the bell rang once and stopped too soon. On the roofs the boy heard the silence it left. The second sign was not the sound but the shape of its absence."

The key is a single word: the word the second sign ends on.
"The dowser knelt where the floor was whole and felt the pull of a room that was not there. No crack, no hollow sound, only his hands heavier over nothing. The third sign is a weight the eye cannot find."
More signs follow, one at a time. The newest appear first among the code-solvers, then come to rest here. When the trail is whole, the signs name it: "The Gaze in the Shadow."
